Hitting The Trails With The Hurtta Trail Pack

If you hike with your dogs, you will never regret having a pack for them. We were SO excited when Hurtta sent us the Trail Pack to test because Chappie was finally big enough to start wearing one. If your dog has their own pack they can carry their water, treats & poop baggies on day hikes. Not to mention on those overnight trips, they can carry their kibble, small first aid kit, & the other items mentioned above. The Hurtta Trail pack is not only a pack, but a trail & safety harness as well & we would recommend it to anyone!

Feeling very comfortable in the Trail Pack after only a few short minutes with it on. You can clearly see the 3M, high visibility reflectors on the chest plate of the harness.

Some of the main features of the Hurtta Trail Pack

  • Separate harness & backpack
  • Fits your pup comfortably
  • Stays in position when your pup is on the move
  • Can be used in the car as a Safety Harness
  • Pack is easy to remove when you just want to use the Harness
  • 3M Reflectors improve visibility in the dark
  • Handle on the back for assistance in hoisting your dog over obstacles
  • Medium Sized Pack has a 4L storage capacity. Large Size has a 10L storage capacity.
  • Packs are waterproof

We started getting Chappie used to the idea of having a pack on his back just by walking him around the neighborhood & desert landscape behind our neighborhood with the Trail Pack on. He was a little thrown off at first, but within minutes he was used to it & on we went. It was great to see the pack staying centered on Chappie’s back & not falling over to one side like I have seen so many packs do. After about 15 minutes, we got to the desert landscape that is behind our neighborhood & let Chappie out to the end of his leash. He immediately started digging & even with all that extra motion, the pack stayed centered & Chappie was not bothered by it.

You can see how fervently Chappie is digging because the bag on his left is catching some air! But the entire set up stayed centered while he was digging to China!

Our second experience with the Trail Pack was out on the trail with some friends for an actual adventure & we found ourselves searching for caves down in Bulldog Canyon. I filled Chappie’s pack with treats, the Hurtta Fountain Bowl, & some first aid supplies. (Just a reminder when filling your pup’s pack: fill it evenly & never make your dog carry more than 20% of his/her body weight! While the Trail Pack stays centered pretty well on its own, filling one side with water & the other with lighter objects will obviously have a “one-sided” effect on the pack & it will look & feel uneven on your dog.) Once again, the pack stayed centered & the durable fabric the pack is made out of resisted any abrasions that could have potentially been made when climbing over rocks & through the cave. We were able to get gear in & out of the pack easily & Chappie did not mind us rummaging through his back at all.

The cave’s rocky, dusty floors & sharp walls had nothing on the Trail Pack’s tough fabric! Not to mention the pack was easy to clean when we got home. PC: Kerri Irwin

We then started using the detachable harness on hikes/walks. That’s right, not only do you get a trail pack when purchasing this product, you get a harness as well. We absolutely love this feature because we don’t always need the pack on our adventures. The interlocking devices that keep the pack attached to the harness are user friendly once you figure out how to use them & are also very strong so you won’t have to worry about that pack breaking free from the harness. The harness is made out of some pretty comfy, mesh-like material that is sleek & breathable & the 3M reflectors on the pack & harness are great for high visibility. The chest plate of the harness was very comfortable for Chappie to wear as well. We also found the handle on the back of the harness helpful when assisting Chappie onto/over an obstacle as well as posing him for photos.

Out on a walk through our local Riparian Preserve with just the Harness on. No pack needed!

We would definitely recommend the Hurtta Trail Pack to all of our fellow adventure pups. It comes in a sleek, black color that Hurtta has appropriately named “Raven”, it’s comfortable for your pup & easy for you to use. The price of this pack is $100 and worth every penny. Some would consider that price “expensive” but consider this. Not only are you getting a trail pack, you are getting a harness as well. That harness can be used on walks, hikes, & even in the car as a safety harness (even though we did not use it in this way). It comes in 2 sizes, Small (for pets 20-40 lbs) & Medium (for pets 40-80 lbs) & has adjustable straps for the belly, collar & chest so you can find that fit that is just right for your pup. The Trail Pack is also very durable & holds up to even the toughest adventure pup, like Chappie, who bumps into every rock or tree he comes across. We have already put plenty of miles on our Trail Pack & look forward to using it more on our adventures to come.

The handle on the back of the harness made it easy to grab Chappie as he was trying to run by me here!
The handle on the back of the harness was SO helpful in hoisting Chappie up on this boulder for a photo op!
